I am an American PhD student who needed to learn Afrikaans to help me pursue research in South Africa. After having spent just a few weeks with Kevin, I was able to reach a fluency that allowed me to read archives and newspapers in Afrikaans, and to build a solid foundation for speaking and listening. Kevin has a strong understanding of the language’s grammar and logic that helps tremendously with comprehension. I also really appreciated how he employed a variety of techniques to help me learn the cultural aspects of the language, including field trips, watching television shows and films, examining creative writing, and meeting people who speak with different dialects. He is a teacher who pays close attention to his students’ learning styles, and adjusts his techniques to meet them. I also found him to be an immensely kind, understanding person, and this made me excited to learn each day. I can’t recommend him enough as an instructor!
